10.11.2009 (mike) | World cup qualifiers
Theres some huge World Cup Qualifying games this week. In the European play offs, Ireland have to try and overcome the mighty France. Ireland have been very strong during the group stage, drawing twice with Italy. If they show the same spirit as those games and the Irish fans get behind them they could provide an upset and qualify for the first time since 2002. France have their problems with injuries and the form of the team during qualifying. (how Raymond Domenech stays in the job beats me!) In saying that, they do have some top players, Henry as ever will provide a threat and Anelka is playing as wel as he has been for years. Add to that the likes of Govou, Diarra and Benzema they'll certainantly provide a stern test.
Elsewhere, Russia should sail past Slovenia and the Greece v Ukraine game looks to be a tight one but an intruiging game will be Portugal v Bosnia.
Portugal like France have been poor during qualifying. They scraped into the play offs and face a Bosnia side who are great going forward. Wolfsburg pair Edin Dzeko and Zvjezdan Misimović can be a thron in anyones side, as they proved at Old Trafford this year. They also have the exciting Miralem Pjanic of Lyon and so this will be far from a stroll for Portugal. However, you would expect Portugal to have enough to win this game although their main player, Cristiano Ronaldo, is out injured (although he's been included in the squad) but they still have likes of Simao and Liedson but this could be where we see an upset.
World cup with no Ronaldo? Its possible. | | Date | Comments | |
